Comprehensive Medical Care
We believe that direct, one-on-one contact with the patient and client is the best way to keep patients healthy and resolve illness. Therefore, we are committed to doing a thorough physical exam and taking a detailed history. We are also conscientious about calling clients back promptly and following up on patients who have been seen for illness, whether acute or chronic. In addition, we use diagnostics, including bloodwork, urinalysis, tests for parasites or the diseases they carry, radiographs and ultrasound, as tools to direct us to the causes of a patient’s illness. When necessary, we do not hesitate to consult with internists at the laboratories we use in order to provide the most accurate interpretation of lab results. Also, as animals age, it is particularly important to do labwork on a regular basis to identify underlying diseases for which they may not yet be symptomatic. Finally, labwork is part of the essential database, along with a complete physical exam, for providing the best outcome for those patients who are going to undergo anesthesia/surgery.
Check-ups and Vaccinations
We schedule routine appointments every half hour so we can give each patient and client the time they deserve. We examine all patients with an in-depth or brief exam depending on the reason for their visit. We ask that when clients bring their dog or cat in for an annual exam, they provide us with information about everything the pet is eating, how the pet has been doing since the last visit, and of course, express any specific concerns they have. We will take the time to listen to you, examine the pet carefully, and address those concerns. We vaccinate pets appropriately, based on their lifestyle, and are happy to discuss the need for, and value of the different vaccines we recommend.
Preventive Care
Preventive care is of great importance to us. Although we have been trained to treat animals that are ill, we hope to educate clients as much as possible in those details they can use to keep their pets healthy, whether it is brushing their teeth, feeding them appropriately based on age or illness, dealing with weather-related problems and so many other issues.
Surgery and Dental Care
We perform routine surgical procedures including, but not limited to, neuters, ovariohysterctomies, and removal of skin masses. We do not perform complicated procedures such as orthopedic surgery. We believe that these should be done by surgeons with specific expertise, in specialty facilities with good follow-up care. We also provide routine dental care but refer patients to a veterinary dentist when they have significant disease of the teeth or gums. Keeping in mind that we do not hospitalize patients overnight, we do our procedures in the morning so that your pet will walk out our front door with you in the evening, alert and awake. We will only send the pet to an emergency clinic after a procedure at our hospital if we have already discussed this with you.
New Puppy/Kitten Visits
We strive to use that important first visit with new puppies and kittens to get everyone off to a great start. These appointments can run up to one hour and we schedule them accordingly. We provide a handout which reiterates all the valuable information that is discussed during the visit and encourage feedback from clients, for whom this may be a first animal or the newest of many. And we hope you are as thrilled by the cheese lollipop as your puppy will be!
Emergencies
Although we cannot see emergencies on a regular basis, we will always try to accommodate patients who have minor emergencies. However, we will advise that patients be taken to one of the three emergency clinics in the area if we determine that it is in the animal’s best interest to do so after speaking with the client.
Emergency Clinics
As of January 2019, MEAC has moved from Nebel Street to 11503 Rockville Pike. Please be aware that MEAC is located next to a different 24 hour animal clinic and their signage is not yet installed.
Prescription Diets
We carry a full range of prescription diets for our patients. Because our space is limited, we order these specifically for those patients on a monthly basis, but can generally get the diets in within a short time if clients give us a week’s notice.
Pharmacies
Silver Spring Animal Hospital’s online store has most of the prescription diets and pharmaceutical products that a patient may need. We also work with local compounding pharmacies to provide medication in a more palatable form including chicken & tuna flavored prescriptions. For clients whose pets may need medication from a human pharmacy, we will write a prescription.
